Shopping Sites ~ Personal Experience

Like anyone that shops online, uses a service or goes to a restaurant; we all have a variety of experiences.  Some are good and some are bad.  One thing that I like to do before a purchase from either a new site or an item that I am unfamiliar with is to look at other people's options and experiences.  You have to understand that anyone that gives a site one * may have had one of those occasionally "it happens" experiences.  Make sure that when you are reading reviews and opinions that you don't let one good or one bad review color your entire decision.

To get reviews, go to your search engine (google, yahoo or your preference) and type in the SITE Name (i.e. dailysteals.com) or you can go to http://www.resellerratings.com/ and enter the site name for reviews.  If looking for a particular item use your search engine or EXACT item name of what you are researching, including model number.  More than likely you will find reviews/comments.  If it is a product, Amazon.com is a helpful resource.  Why are they helpful?  Because shoppers like you and I write them.  With this in mind, it is helpful for you to also review any items you receive.  Whether you like or dislike, you need to be honest because people depend on what goes into the reviews.

I will start listing my shopping sites (which changes from time to time) with information that MAY assist you with your shopping.  By no means is my experience exactly like others so use your own judgement and know for the most parts companies have good customer service but, issues are dealt with by humans and we all have a bad day!!!

FAVORITE SITES
Kohl's - (Kohl's.com) They have frequent sales, you can stack coupons (many times up to 4), they have "Kohl's Cash" and rebates occasionally which means you are going to get a "killer deal".  I have never had a problem with them and if you order something online you can also return it to the store.  If you have a Kohl's Credit Card, you will also receive "special deals" throughout the year such as pick your own day discount, Birthday Cash, and Free Shipping.  There is no cost for the credit card but on the down side, you can't download into Quicken.

Questions????

I have tried to make things easy in my blog but things can be confusing so....should you have questions on any of my blog procedures, feel free to contact me via email and I will respond as soon as possible.  Make sure you put in the Subject Line BLOG QUESTION.  I will fix my email so "hopefully" they will not fall into my spam box.  I can be emailed at jlshipman225@gmail.com.

10. Problems...Troubleshooting your purchase!

WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MY ORDER?

If you shop on line long enough, this will happen.  I have had “issues” with large companies as well as the smaller ones.  I have found that if you have all your ducks in a row (plenty of documentation) and are persistent you will prevail.  There is no room in this “process” for threats idle or otherwise…factual and accurate as well as only wanting what is fair.

I start out with customer service (do as much as possible through email so that you have accurate documentation) and will work through them as long as I am making progress.  If I talk to more than one person, which is not unusual, and you start getting an “attitude” or “different stories” it is time to politely request a Supervisor.

If you are doing by email, give them 24 hours to respond, if over the phone (take notes as to whom you talk to, always ask for a name, note the date, time and EXACTLY what the conversation was), you may get immediately transferred.  If not, ask when you can expect to hear back and give them that repeat that time back to make sure you understood correctly.  If you do not hear from them, there are a couple of steps that you can take.

1.       Go to your web browser and type in CEO and the company name, some of the larger company actually will provide you with contact number, address and sometimes even an email address of the CEO.  At least ensure that you have their name for future reference.  Attempt to contact.  Be assured that you will more than likely get someone besides the CEO but usually you will get someone that has the “authority” to correct the situation.

2.      You can always get on line on Facebook and see if the company has a FB page.  If so, hit the like button and take a few minutes to read “any comments” that have been placed on the FB page.  DO NOT post negative comments, BUT send them a PM indicating your issues, what has transpired and what resolve you expect…kind and courteous.  More than likely you will get some kind of response.  If it becomes a back and forth and they start shutting down and not responding, it is time to take it up the ladder, call or write the Corporate Office.

3.      If all else fails and it appears that the company may be going out of business, you can contact your credit card company as well as the Better Business Bureau and Attorney General in your state as well as the state in which the company is doing business…this is where having the company info will pay off because many of them shutdown their websites and you have no idea how to contact them or where they are located.  To contact the BBB/State Attorney, type that into your Web Browser.  According to the dollars involved how far you want to take it but you surely do not want ANYONE else suffering from the same situation.

The last issue I had, I ended up going through Customer Service email (3 different people), then Facebook, 3 message the first being “they would be pleased to help me as 100% Customer Satisfaction was their goal”.  After 3 message back and forth, their “tune” changed and was told I needed to work through Customer Service…shutdown.  I wrote a letter to the CEO, and before I knew it, I got a response from a Customer Service Manager, correcting the issue.
I never ask for something that was NOT promised from the beginning but I do expect to receive what I ordered/paid for in a TIMELY manner.  BE PERSISTENT, the attitude of many businesses today is that Customer Service is a catch phrase…it should be the rule and not the exception!

HAPPY SHOPPING!!!!  If you need help or assistance, please leave a comment and I will get back to you as soon as possible!

9. Misc. USEFUL Information!

EMAILS

After purchases you should receive and email verification.  If you do not, CHECK YOUR SPAM/TRASH BOX.  According to which program you use, some of them will drop this kind of email in the spam/trash and you will have to retrieve it.  If it is not in your spam/trash and you HAVE an order number, you can always contact the company.

At the bottom of the company page (USUALLY) there is an area that says “CONTACT US”, “CUSTOMER SERVICE”, or look in “FAQ”.  If you need to contact a company about ANYTHING it is best to do it via email/computer, this gives you documentation of what transpired.

I make a folder in the program that I receive my emails called “ORDERS”.  All emails that I receive; verification, update status etc. goes into that email folder in the event there is any issues with receipt of the order.  This for me has been a life saver more than once.  If you have any issues and you need to contact “HIGHER UP THE FOOD CHAIN” having emails documenting issues can make the difference!

HOW TO STOP GETTING EMAILS

If you are getting way to many emails or you are getting from sites you do not want (some sites SHARE your email with other sites).  You can go to the bottom of the email and there is usually an option to unsubscribe.  This is kind of like getting on the DO NOT CALL LIST and sometimes it takes a while to get off.  Be PERSISTENT!!!

DOWNLOADING UPDATES TO SOFTWARE

You do need to keep your software updated but be CAUTIOUS, as some of the software will try and “piggy back” other software with it.  Take the time to look at the screens, if there is a piggy back software there is USUALLY a box that you can check/uncheck that you are declining that part of the download.  Many times it is another protection program or malware (this is advertising/junk that will cause your computer to slow down)

PASSWORD REMINDER

Since more than likely you will have bunches of passwords to remember, you will need to keep a notebook (I know they tell you not to…but really who can remember them all).  There does not seem to be a constant in Passwords, some want a number some want a special character some needs a capital letter…too many different rules.  Besides, if you make your password the same for all your accounts, if someone gets it, they have access to everything.  I keep mine on a spreadsheet that I save in DROPBOX (a FREE program) so it is available on my IPad as well as my computer, if you would like more information on DROPBOX, just let me know and I will get it together for you.  Link for the site is https://www.dropbox.com/

I have started making my passwords out of letters from a phrase that is easy to remember but would mean NOTHING to anyone else (i.e.  MdniB187  your reminder phrase would be My daughter’s name is Becky the numbers are your address)  Using your address or phone number is NOT a good idea unless you are using with a phrase like the above example.

You can also log on with your Facebook account if that makes it easier for you!!  This is an option that is available on SOME accounts.

CREDIT CARD REMINDER

Similar to the Password reminder, it helps to have your credit card information at hand either in you PROTECTED notebook or electronically.  Most sites will need the number as well as CV code and expiration date

HOW TOS

Many times, when looking for general “How to” info with step by step instructions, you can look on https://www.youtube.com/ just type in what you are trying to find info on…remember these are individuals posting and most are accurate but different computers and different software (even different versions) can make a difference.  If you just need a written version of something I have found that a good resource is http://www.wikihow.com/Main-Page  Just type in the search box and it will bring it up for you!

CUT AND PASTE

This is a feature that can be a life saver!  On your computer, place you blinking cursor at the BEGINNING of the information that you want to cut OR COPY, then HOLDING down the SHIFT key, HIGHLIGHT the area that you want to work with.  This can be done by DRAGGING the mouse over the information OR just using the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the cursor while holding down the SHIFT key.

Once it is HIGHLIGHTED, you can let up on the SHIFT KEY , press on the RIGHT BUTTON on the MOUSE and a drop down menu will give you the option to copy or cut.  Choose COPY, then place your cursor where you want the information pasted to (this can be another place in the document, another document or EVEN another program)!

Once you have chosen where you want it by placing the cursor in that position, you will need to hit the RIGHT BUTTON on the mouse and using the drop down menu PASTE!!!  It is just that simple.  Try it a few times until you are comfortable with it.  This is something that can save you lots of time and aggravation.

CHECKING OUT SITES

When you get on a new site, ALWAYS look around and try to get to the contact, FAQ, and sitemap (found at the bottom of the page). If everything seems to work fine….THEN go to your Web Browser and type in “has anyone had issues with THE SITE NAME”.  Review the responses if any…Sometimes it is just one disgruntled person, use your own judgment.

Also check for the S after https on the site name and use the link found earlier that can assist in identifying valid sellers (http://dealnews.com/features/How-to-Tell-if-an-Online-Retailer-is-Worthy-of-Your-Dollars/1013394.html )

DROPBOX

This is a program that is a FREE Application that you download to your computer and your IPad.  You place/save items into the Dropbox folder then you have access no matter which system you are on.  Additionally, you can set up specific files and INVITE others to have access! I currently have a share file with Mark concerning Auction info and Anita to share recipes.
The more people that you sign up, the more FREE space you have…LOVE IT.  Will be happy to supply you more information if you are interested.

Link for the site is https://www.dropbox.com/

IPAD OR Android APPS

Just get on the APP Store on your IPad and type in Daily Deals (or specific sites) and look for FREE downloads.  Just a reminder that some of the new IPADs (IPAD Air) do have problems with certain apps.  You can always check if there are known issues by typing in your Web Browser “IPad issues with woot.com”

If you have an Android device, go to Google Play.  You will find more ways to shop than you every dreamed of!

8. PayPal Accounts

PAYPAL ACCOUNTS

Go to https://www.paypal.com/ , click on the sign up button at the top and follow the instructions provided!

This is great if you sell or buy on Ebay.com as many of the sellers only accept PayPal.  This also gives you the capability to transfer money to someone in the event of need (i.e. college student needs funds, vacation money lost by loved one etc.).

Safe and Secure.....

7.Bookmarking your Sites - where the heck did I put that??

BOOKMARKING YOUR SITES
When you find sites that you like or may want to refer to in the future, bookmarking them keeps them at hand.  Again the process can be slightly different with different Browsers (Chrome, Internet Explorer or Firefox).  If you need assistance, type into your web browser window…”How to BookMark using…(Google Chrome, IE etc)”
Firefox
Once you have the site on your screen, you can go to the top where you see a menu and click on BOOKMARKS, Bookmark this page.

This will give a “general bookmark”.  I have found that I like to sort my bookmarks so I have made files/categories that suit my needs (i.e. shopping, utilities, insurance etc.). To set up the initial folders, go to

BOOKMARKS
BOOKMARK THIS PAGE
Click the down arrow beside BOOKMARK MENU
Click NEW FOLDER

Create folders as you need them!  When you go to drop a page in a specific folder, you will need to follow the same procedure EXCEPT scroll down BOOKMARK MENU area until you find the folder that you are looking for.

OPENING ENTIRE BOOKMARKED FOLDER

This is GREAT when you have a list of sites that you like to “hit” for daily deals.  Go to your Bookmarks, find the folder you want and you will receive a dropdown box with all the files in that folder listed, the bottom one says OPEN ALL IN TAB (see screen shot below)
